principle.
In any production, from musical theater to museum curation to ensemble dance, what is your role? It is to support that production with your talent, to the best of your ability, to ensure the project’s success. In film and television, every audition, every script edit, every lighting change, every direction, every slate, every take, every post-production edit -- even if they are turned down, thrown out, or reconsidered -- improves the production. We learn from all the things we do, not the things we don’t do. If you pursue a role on a production and are hired into that role, realize that someone is taking a chance on you after considering (probably many) other people. And while it is always nice to thank the team that is taking a chance on you, recognize with empathy the people who didn’t get the job this time -- they are NOT your competition, they are your peers. Their participation in being considered may have actually helped you get the gig. Having choices helps the people responsible for hiring decide on you and support their decision that you were exactly what they needed. The most common thing that sets truly successful people, in whatever profession they choose, apart from others is gratitude. Being thankful to those who come ahead of you, as well as behind you, is key; a principled gratitude lifts the entire artistic spectrum and helps you remain grounded in your artistry.
