healthy.
Establishing a healthy relationship with your work includes setting appropriate boundaries in terms of time, expectations, and energy. When any artist takes the time to set up a disciplined schedule for practicing, it becomes easier to follow that routine, enter it and exit it quickly and efficiently, and it invites even more creativity. For screen artists, the personal and professional are often one and the same: your creativity is 24/7, so how do you infuse discipline and gentle boundaries to encourage more imagination for something so integrated with your life? For instance, when I am writing, the act of walking away from myself to get a break from my own headspace appears nonsensical. However, creative breaks for me are necessary, as I realize when I hit a block. The point is to step away before you (and I) get to those blocks, so that what looms in the distance of your mind can be seen before you arrive there. There are times when that’s utterly impossible, when you have an idea that is so captivating that you have to chase it to its end or until you run smack into one of those blocks. But, most creativity is actually practiced creativity. Setting a schedule for yourself (and perhaps an alarm!), dropping into the work through meditation, exercises, etc., and then getting to it for a specific block of time that has a more-or-less finite endpoint helps artistry. Keeping your mind on task and in the moment focuses your attention, gives shape to your day, and, like exercise, becomes easier with time.
