career.
“Practice your craft.” It’s something we say a lot here. What we mean is, if you want to be an artist, treat artistry like it’s your job. Practicing something brings skill, understanding, and technique, though not necessarily in that order. While classes will help you to further all three of those, they’re not the only option -- developing artistry in other ways when you’re outside the gig is not only possible, but a key to unlocking your career inside the gig. Invite yourself to spend time practicing movement, reading, accents, meditation, voice exercises, and challenge yourself to deepen script analysis and self-tape skills through solo play. Explore wherever and whenever you can -- sitting in traffic, taking a shower, preparing a meal, cleaning your room, folding your laundry, waiting in line, lying in bed. Join a community, local improv group, or writer’s group, or volunteer on a friend’s indie project / start your own indie project. Being around other artists will drive you creatively, and can help you establish/improve your network. Every hour you spend refining your instrument is an hour spent furthering your craft and career as an artist.

Let’s explore another route to invigorating our senses and imagination. Embodiment.
