the value of a reset: in film, life, and for you

After 30+ years in the film/tv biz I've experienced the ever-changing nature of our industry and believe the ability to reset is a superpower.

Let's start with the term "reset" and how it is used daily in the film/tv industry.

"reset" in film terms...

  • A reset is when the first take is complete, and the director wants to "go again" to film a second take. Actors, cameras, and everyone/everything goes back to their first position at the beginning of a scene.

  • A reset for a scene that takes place in a lake (yes, I directed one of these) means getting the actor completely dry again, redoing hair and makeup, providing an identical set of dry clothing, and making sure props and other aspects of the set are dry.

  • A reset in a multi-cam sitcom means they are moving to an attached room. Example: The scene starts in the living room. Characters argue. Character A storms off into the kitchen. Then Character B follows after, and the argument continues in the kitchen. While it's a continuous scene, the cameras, microphones, etc. on the sound stage have to move from the living room and reset in the kitchen to continue filming.

the reset creates opportunity...

Resetting is about creating (or making space for) an opportunity for improvement.

The ability to pause and take a holistic look at your current situation to decide what needs to change...and then make that change happen...is not only a regular practice on set, but an essential life skill.

Small shifts or a giant overhaul, all resets are essential for growth.

personally speaking...

As an artist and founder CEO, I'm keenly aware of the value of a reset because I'm currently in the midst of a one with ArvoldWarnerStudio.com.

Our education studio's mission to provide film/tv industry insight, artistic accountability, and a safe space for multi-hyphenate actors and screen artists to commune is steadfast. But, some aspects of our membership (that was established at the beginning of the pandemic) are no longer relevant. So, we have begun a reset, and it feels wonderful!

we're all resetting, every day...

Philosophically speaking, aren't we all in reset mode upon waking each new day?

You can begin each morning any way you wish, and perhaps today there is a different spring in your step.

Embrace it. It's your superpower.
