Observing others is a skill everyone hones almost from birth. Modeled behavior is how humans learn how to do things: speak words, then sentences, then paragraphs; do the dishes; be warm and courteous toward others; share, etc. In screen artistry, the study of others in order to learn their behaviors is heightened and refined, and becomes a skill that every professional in the industry recognizes as a requirement. One aspect of this that somehow gets overlooked by many is that of observing other screen artists as they work through a scene with a teacher, coach, or director -- seeing the subtle shifts that other artists make in order to bring verisimilitude. As a director, it is impossible to stress enough how the observation of other artists’ choices can improve your own performance.
