juggle.
On the ‘Smartless’ podcast recently, Sean Hayes, Will Arnett, and Jason Bateman interviewed Jeff Daniels, and their comments to him at one point in the episode really stood out to me: they congratulated him on his success, wondered aloud how it felt to have “made it”, and then discussed how they would like to have “made it”, too.
We’ve been led to believe in success as a place where you have what you want, but that’s not really true. Success is more like a place to catch your breath while you adjust your goals. It’s a fleeting moment of contentment.
Success begets a desire for more success, but in order to stay successful, you have to be able to juggle it all -- so you have to prepare for it. The best way to prepare is to practice. So, instead of focusing on some indefinable goal like “I want to be a movie star”, practice for that: what are three goals you can set for yourself that you can accomplish today? They don’t have to be huge. Make myself breakfast. Take a shower. Write a paragraph about something that interests me. What are three goals you can do by the end of this week? This month? This year? Practicing goal-setting and goal-meeting will help you to break down your long-term goals into smaller chunks that are more manageable, until goal-setting and goal-meeting become habitual.
