Is your posture preventing you from owning your power? 3 simple changes can re-introduce you to the world.

Is your posture preventing you from owning your power? 3 simple changes can re-introduce you to the world.

I slumped my way through middle and high school.

I hit 5'11" at 12 years old, and kept growing. I spent years trying to lessen my visibility. But, I couldn't hide. It took me years to learn to embrace my personal presence and stand in my power.

Here are three simple changes that you can apply to 'stand tall' too.

1. PLANT YOUR FEET

I know it sounds counterintuitive, but rooting to rise is the foundation of taking up the space you deserve.

Imagine your feet (of whatever part of your body is connecting to the ground) reaching all the way to the center of the earth. An anchor of connectivity supported by the ground beneath you.

You belong here, in this space.

Now test the difference: Imagine tip toeing through life rather than relying on the earth to hold you up when walking. Makes a huge difference, right?

2. UNCROSS YOUR ARMS

We've all seen it in the movies...huddled in a corner, curled up like a ball, arms and legs crossed and squeezed tight to self-protect and not let anyone in. Powerless.

Even the casual crossing arms in front of your torso as you stand communicates that you are less open, and proclaims defensiveness both internally as well as to those around you.

Keep your arms open, by your side (or your thumbs hooked through the loops on your waistband, wonder woman style), and feel the difference it makes.

Own the room.

3. SHOULDERS BACK, HEAD HIGH

Our current world is full of turtle-like posture.

So many of us are hunched over a computer screen with our head forward/chin out, like a turtle peeking out from their shell.

Imagine a string that stretches the crown of your head up towards the sky. Your neck elongates, your chin and head return to balance. Shoulders widen and slide down your back, and your chest expands.

Take a breath.

Stretching regularly to keep your shoulders back, and your head squarely on top of your body makes a world of difference when you walk into a room. This influences your breathing too. Like a singer, stacked posture will help you access a full diaphragm, lung capacity, and vocal range.

You deserve to be seen and heard.

Posture influences how others see you.

Stand in your power.
