actor confidence: 3 keys to expressing yours (in an audition)

After 30+ years as a casting director, I'd say the #1 quality that makes an actor stand out is confidence.

Here's how:

an artist's confidence captivates their audience

Have you ever been glued to the screen watching a rock star, dancer, or actor?

I cannot help but feel the confident charisma of Mick Jagger, Beyoncé, Misty Copeland, Michelle Yeoh, Francis McDormand, and Viola Davis (and the list goes on...). I simply cannot look away when they are performing.

Their confidence transcends the screen and moves the audience.

The same concept applies to actors in auditions.

3 keys to expressing your confidence in auditions

  • Prepare: beyond knowing the lines, artistic confidence requires knowing your character fully and completely

  • Be spontaneous: rather than performing the scene as you imagine it 'should' be, confidently journey through a scene with curiosity in order to make a fresh discovery in each take

  • Know you belong: you deserve the audition and are NOT there to prove you can act, but rather offer your unique interpretation of a role to serve a story

Confidence makes the difference between a good audition and a great one!
